I am originally from Chicago. As a child I did a lot of hands-on crafts. In my freshman year in high school, I took a sewing class. At that time, I made a skirt and a blouse. I enjoyed making those garments so much that my mother bought me my first sewing machine. At that time tall girl pants were almost non-existent, so I was able to make myself pants long enough to fit. By my senior year, I made my prom dress. Then after graduation I went to a 2-year junior college. Here I had a professor that stressed the point of pressing out garments, and that has stuck with me to this day, and I try my best to press out the garments, so no wrinkles are present. In 1971, I made my wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, and from the success of that it was suggested I start to make for other people. I put an ad in our local newspaper, and Alterations by Diane was created.
